Championship Update
Round 6 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Championship takes us to the sunny villa that is the Hard Rock Miami Grand Prix circuit where drivers battled the fierce bridge section and the long straights to find any advantage they could.
Heading into this round in the PRO class Sam Muir still leads the championship on 1875 points, finding that elusive first victory in Race 1 last time out and now with 8 podium finishes to his name, the most of anyone on the grid. He is now over 255 points ahead of Jaxon Reihana who is locked in a battle with Allan Dawson for 2nd place with only 2 points between them.
In AM class the battle between Rob Hamilton and Brock Caddaye, 1st and 2nd respectively, is heating up once again with Rob Hamilton breaking the 4 race win-streak Brock Caddaye was on in the first race of Round 5 but with Brock Caddaye ultimately finding the top podium step in Race 2. Behind them in third Craig Spiterri is one to watch but needs a good round to put some distance between Andrew Green and third overall.
Qualifying
Qualifying was a battle of wits with drivers trying to stay in the slip stream as much as possible to elevate themselves into the top spots knowing that the difference between a race win and a lower place finish would be defined by staying with the lead group. Sam Muir went on to finish P1 with a 1:57.011 over 2 tenths quicker than Jaxon Reihana who placed 2nd. Wyllie Blair in only his third race of the season put in a 1:57.293 only 6 hundreds away from taking 2nd place away from Jaxon Reihana. In AM class Andrew Green took the top spot with a 1:58.059 with Brock Caddaye and Rob Hamilton close behind.
Race 1 // 25 Minutes
Race 1 began with a bang after a decent get away for all off the line Wyllie Blair found himself on the inside of Jaxon Reihana locking up into turn 1 joining into the main battle pack and leaving Jaxon Reihana to make a speedy recovery back onto track to start working his way through the field ultimately letting Sam Muir build a large gap out front. Andrew Green started off cleanly maintaining his first place in AM until Jared Macleod made an unforced error into Turn 7 leading Ross Buchan to lock the brakes and spin his Antic SimSports car in front of 3 cars leading Brock Caddaye to make a brave outside move to take first place in AM. Hayden Cupitt alongside Reihana and Blair were at it again attempting three-wide which led Cupitt to slam in the left hand barriers dropping 2 places as a result.
Both Reihana and Blair inevitably ending up locked in another battle with Blair trying the outside line into turn 1 and Reihana not giving up the position saw Thomas Wilson pip them both for 7th overall with Brock Caddaye in-train still leading AM class. Some brilliant racecraft saw them go three wide with Reihana eventually putting his back in front with Blair forced to the outside, but a small mistake put Reihana on the back foot again allowing Wilson to retake the lead of the group before Blair was able to overtake him shortly after.
Out front Sam Muir and Simon Mezzomo for 9INE5IVE SimSports led comfortably with only a single Summit Sim Sports car for company; Matt Bayley. Over the line Sam Muir took his second race victory with Mezzomo a close second place with Matt Bayley in 3rd. Brock Caddaye took 9th overall, up 4 positions from 13th putting himself in 2nd place for the Top 10 reverse start of race 2 with Andrew Green and Rob Hamilton rounding out the Race 1 AM class podium.
Race 2 // 45 Minutes
Race 2 saw Luke Newing start in pole for our reverse top 10 grid for the Feature race, he was alongside Brock Caddaye with Sam Muir starting P10 and Reihana starting in P11. Going into turn one Caddaye was caught out on the inside line into Turn 1 missing his braking marker and causing a collision with Newing that started a chain reaction allowing Ross Buchan to narrowly avoid contact to sneak through up into P2. This set the stage for the opening lap as a lead group rapidly formed led by Newing with Buchan and Jarrod MacLeod who was making waves early on to put pressure on the leaders. Smelling blood in the water Wyllie Blair formed up the last part of the top group with Brock Caddaye starting to fall back through the pack under immediate pressure by Aden Lennox-Bradley with Thomas Wilson and Mezzzomo following closely behind.
A poor start for Sam Muir as his chances of another race win began to evaporate for him, the two Summit Sim Sports cars; Reihana and Bayley, were almost immediately ahead of him on lap 1 and with nowhere to go he had to fall in line. Just in front of him Ethan Johnson had a scuffle with Jaxon Reihana who took advantage of the wide Miami circuit launching his car up the inside of both Johnson and Mezzomo but overshooting the braking zone and finding himself immediately in the run off area. The lead pack battled fiercely into turn 12 with Wyllie Blair doing the out and in to take P2 with Caddaye having rejoined the lead pack.
Behind them though it was chaos in Turn 12 as Ethan Johnson touched the rear of Matt Bayley sending him into a spin fortunately out of the path of other cars with Thomas Wilson applying the brakes quickly to avoid a follow up incident.
Out front it was Luke Newing’s game leading the pack smoothly through the first few laps until disaster struck at the bridge section, the front-left suspension giving way and forcing him to lose position after position and ultimately forcing an untimely finish to his race. This gave way to an almighty 3 way battle through to the end of the race between Ross Buchan, Wyllie Blair and Thomas Wilson; the three drivers exchanging positions multiple times and as we came toward the final laps of the race a near-miss for Rob Hamilton after Ethan Johnson found himself taking too much curb in the esses. But that wasn’t it, in the penultimate corner of the final lap Thomas Wilson and Ross Buchan were tripping over each other putting themselves precariously close to being out of the race entirely and ending up in a 3 way photo finish across the line with Sam Muir who moved up into the final podium position at the close to the race.
Wyllie Blair took a hard fought victory in PRO class with Ross Buchan and Sam Muir rounding out the podium, Thomas Wilson missing out by less than a tenth of a second. In the AM class Brock Caddaye finished in P1, 9th overall, with Andrew Green holding onto second ahead of Rob Hamilton.
